5 Ways To Reduce Your Risk of a Car Accident

Car accidents are literally everywhere in Metro Atlanta. We all see the reckless drivers, drunk drivers, tired drivers and worse. How can you keep yourself safe amidst the chaos on Georgia roads? You have to be proactive, not reactive. Your safety and the safety of your loved one just may depend upon it.

Here are 5 ways to reduce your risk of a car accident:

1. LIMIT YOUR DISTRACTIONS: Music, food, cell phones and kids can all be serious distractions. Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents. When you are driving, ONLY focus on the road.

2. UTILIZE HANDS-FREE OPTIONS: Hands-free navigation and mobile phone options are a must. Limit calls to an absolute minimum while driving and only make calls using completely hands-free options.

3. TAKE A DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE: I know it may sound cliché, but they really can help. These types of courses can update you on new driving laws, dangerous driving trends and better prepare you to deal with reckless drivers.

4. GET YOUR EYES CHECKED: Many drivers assume that having to squint or the inability to see well at night is just par for the course. Driving with poor vision is very dangerous. Have your vision checked by a professional and follow their recommended treatment plan. Be sure to tell them about the driving issues you are having as well.

5. KEEP YOUR VEHICLE WELL MAINTAINED: A poorly maintained vehicle has much more of a chance of breaking down. Tire blow outs, transmission failure and poorly maintained windshield wipers are just a few of the vehicle issues that can lead to serious car accidents.

4th of July Safety Tips

Happy 4th of July from The Foster Firm! We hope your holiday is fun, fabulous and safe. Here are a few 4th of July safety tips to help ensure that your holiday is enjoyable:

FIREWORK SAFETY: Never, ever purchase or use illegal fireworks. They can be extremely dangerous and lead to serious injury. Never let children handle fireworks either, legal or illegal.

CAREFULLY PLAN ROAD TRIPS: Carefully planning holiday road trips can save you aggravation and help to keep you safe on the road. Make sure your vehicle is tuned up, tires are properly inflated, fluids are topped off and you are aware of any road construction.

DO NOT DRIVE INTOXICATED: Many people like to enjoy libations during the 4th of July holiday. Be sure to plan ahead. Have a designated driver, spend the night where you are or utilize a driving service like Uber. Never drive, even a close distance, after indulging in alcohol.

7 Signs That You Need A New Personal Injury Attorney

Choosing the right personal injury attorney, can be a challenging task. In most cases, after a serious injury you may feel overwhelmed, inundated with pain and completely stressed out. So, you may be tempted to let things slide with your attorney, but you need to make sure you have the right representation. Here are 7 signs that you may need a new personal injury attorney:

1. Poor Communication: You should be able to speak directly with your attorney within a reasonable amount of time after initiating contact.

2. Lack Luster Track Record: If they don’t have a history of success in dealing with your type of case, that can be a serious red flag.

3. Seems Insincere: If your attorney “seems” insincere, they probably are. Trust your gut instincts.

4. Disciplinary Action: Be sure that your attorney has not been disciplined by the Bar Association or other governing body.

5. Weak Investigating: Your attorney should immediately start a thorough investigation on your behalf. Weak investigating can cost you your case.

6. Dishonest: If you catch your attorney being dishonest about anything, even something small, it is not a good sign. Your attorney should be 100% honest with you all the time.

7. No support team: It takes a strong team to protect your rights and help you win.

5 Major Causes of Slip & Fall Accidents

Slip and fall accidents can lead to very serious, even fatal, injuries. Even when we are being as careful as possible, accidents can still happen. Still, taking preventative measures in certain types of places and situations can definitely reduce your risks of a slip and fall accident.

Here are 5 major causes of slip and fall accidents that you should be aware of:

1. Wet floors: Those slippery when wet signs are just put out for decoration. This is a REAL WARNING that you should heed. Wet floors should be completely avoided in businesses and at home if at all possible.

2. Bathroom bathing: Bathtubs and showers can be very tranquil places, but also can be very dangerous. Bathroom accidents are a prominent cause of slip and falls. Use slip proof shower and bath mats, safety rails and extreme caution if at all possible you are showering or bathing.

3. Low & poor lighting: When you can’t see where you’re going or if there is something unseen in your path, that can be extremely dangerous. Try to avoid poorly lit areas or bring additional lighting with you. Flashlight apps are also a useful tool in these situations.

4. Stairwells: Stairwells, especially poorly maintained ones, can often lead to bad falls. Take your time and don’t run up or down stairwells if you do not absolutely have to. Also, use the handrail to help you keep your balance.

5. Uneven sidewalks & concrete: Raised or uneven concrete can easily cause even the most coordinated person to trip and fall. Carefully keeping an eye on your path and avoiding poorly maintained sidewalks can help reduce your risks.

Preventing Personal Injury During Spring Break

Spring break usually brings sunshine, travel and general good times. Don’t let your good times be sabotaged by injury.  One bad fall, accident or car wreck can leave you will long term injuries and financial woes that are difficult to recover from. So stay healthy and safe so you can enjoy Spring and Summer in  complete comfort. Here are a few tips to help prevent personal injury during spring break:

Travel During Nonpeak Hours: Starting your travel a few hours earlier than the rest of the pack can help to reduce your risk of heavy traffic and accidents. It is also a good idea to plan to miss rush hour traffic at your destination as well.  Timing and planning your route is crucial to safe travel.

Choose More Remote Destinations: Selecting travel destinations that are off the beaten path and less crowded can be much safer. Often times more people and large crowds can increase your risks for falls and injuries.

Select Activities Wisely: Windsurfing, bungee jumping and hiking all sound great, but can be dangerous if your body is not physically up to the task.  Be realistic about your fitness and athletic prowess so you don’t subject yourself to the risk of unnecessary injury.

If you are injured during spring break, contact The Foster Firm. We are personal injury experts and will protect your rights. We fight hard to get our clients the compensation they deserve.

Don’t Be A Victim Of Medical Malpractice: Tips To Protect Yourself

Medical malpractice can have very serious, permanent consequences, including brain damage, loss of mobility, unnecessary surgeries and even death. That’s why it’s so important to protect yourself to the best of your ability. Of course most doctors are very caring, responsible and capable, but that does not mean that you have to trust them implicitly all the time. Even the best doctors can make a tragic mistake.  Here are a few tips to help you protect yourself from being a victim of medical malpractice:

KEEP THOROUGH MEDICAL RECORDS: Knowing your medical history and keeping organized records of your own is important. This will help ensure that when you are completing paperwork at your doctor’s office you are giving them accurate and up-to-date information.

UNDERSTAND THE MEDICATIONS YOU ARE TAKING: Medications can be very helpful in treating ailments and relieving pain, but you must be aware of the hidden dangers as well.  Do your homework on any and all medications you take, including side effects, drug interactions and possible long-term effects. Be sure you share all prescription and non-prescription medications you are taking with your doctor before accepting a new prescription (even if your doctor doesn’t ask).

BE AN ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF: You have to take charge of your health. Living a healthy lifestyle, keeping abreast on medical advances and being vocal with your doctor is imperative. Don’t be afraid to ask the doctors and nurses questions until you feel comfortable and satisfied with the answers. Also, do not shy away from getting second opinions, especially in the case of a serious diagnosis such as cancer. Also, research your doctor's background to make sure he or she has not been involved in censures or sued for and/or accused of malpractice in the past.

If you have been the victim of medical malpractice, The Foster Firm can help. We have vast experience is the area and can fully protect your rights. Contact us to learn more about how we can help.

Tips To Prevent Trick Or Treating Injuries

Halloween is a time for scary stories, fun costumes and of course lots and lots of treats. It can also be dangerous as well. Traveling at night, attending dark haunted houses and of course trick-or-treating can leave participants in these activities vulnerable to potential risks. Many children in Georgia trick-or-treat on their own without any adult supervision. It is up to all of us to try and keep them as safe as possible. Here are a few tips to help prevent trick or treating injuries:

HAVE YOUR HOME WELL LIT: Your little visitors need to see where they are going. Be sure to provide them with a clear, fully lit pathway to your front door.

DON’T DRIVE UNLESS NECESSARY: Cars traveling down the same roads that young trick or treaters are walking along adds extra risks. Many costumes can be hard to see at night, so it is best to do any necessary travel before or after trick or treating hours if at all possible.

DRESS YOUR TRICK OR TREATER APPROPRIATELY: If you are sending your trick or treater out on Halloween, be sure they have a flashlight, clothing that fits well, shoelaces are tightly laced and that their costume has some bright colors on it. You want to be sure tripping hazards are minimized and visibility is maximized.

We hope you have a safe and fun-filled Halloween. We hope these trick or treating safety tips help. Happy Halloween from The Foster Firm team!

3 Questions You Should Ask When Choosing An Accident Attorney

A serious accident can leave you devastated. Physical suffering, emotional distress, family strain and financial ruin can just be some of the problems you have to face in the aftermath of an accident. That is why it is so crucial to select your accident attorney carefully. Catchy slogans and constant commercials does not necessarily equate to quality legal representation. Here are a few questions we recommend that you ask before choosing an accident attorney...

1. What is their actual record for the specific type of accident claim you have? Ask for real world numbers, exact settlement amounts and trial results.

2. How experienced are they with dealing with insurance companies? Find out what insurance companies they have dealt with and how successful they were with the various insurance firms.

3. Who will be personally handling your case? You need to know if you will just be passed off to a lesser experienced attorney or legal assistant. It’s important to know you will be able to work directly with the attorney that you are expecting will represent you.

We would be more than happy to answer these questions for you at The Foster Firm. We have a verifiable track record of success in accident claims. We are well respected Accident Attorneys in Metro Atlanta. Feel free to call us to learn more.

Preventing Animal Bites & Attacks

Summer usually means lots of time spent outside. Family get-togethers, sporting events and barbecues are all fun-filled, but with the enjoyment of the outdoors also comes increased risks of dog bites and other animal attacks. Loose dogs, indigenous snakes and pesky rodents can all pose potential bite risks. Protecting yourself is important. You and your family should try your best to reduce your risks so that you all can stay safe and comfortable the whole summer long.

Here are a few tips to help reduce your risk of dog and animal bites:

Keep your yard and home exterior free of food and debris that may attract pests and rodents

Keep your landscaping neat and trim so snakes and pests do not have easy places to hide

If you have issues with stray or unleashed animals, contact your local animal control unit

Consider fencing in your yard to keep out unwanted animals

If you do suffer from an animal or dog bite because of another’s negligence, contact us. We help clients in Atlanta receive just compensation when they are the victim of animal bites that result in injuries. We have years of experience and never charge any fees until your case is settled.

Summertime Safety – Preventing Injuries & Reducing Risks

Summertime brings fun, sun, barbecues, road trips and more. With so much excitement going on, sometimes safety can take a backseat. It’s important though to be aware of some of the safety risks that are a part of summer fun so you can take precautions to help minimize your risks. Here are a few safety tips you may want to consider:

ONLY VISIT SAFE WATER AREAS: Who doesn’t like a refreshing swim or soak on a hot summer day?  You and your family need to keep safety in mind though when you decide to visit any local pool or lake. Make sure there are trained life guards on duty, you have a life vest or flotation device to use and never leave children unattended.

READY YOUR CAR FOR THE ROAD: Summer road trips aren’t so fun if you suddenly find yourself broken down on the side of the road. Be sure your car is tuned up, tire pressure is checked and you have emergency food and water before you hit the road for a summer getaway.

STAY HYDRATED & COOL: So many people get sick, and even die from, heat exhaustion. If you spend a lot of time outdoors during the summer months, staying hydrated and taking breaks is imperative.  The body loses so much fluid when you spend time in the blazing heat, so drink lot of water throughout the day.  Also, give your body lots of opportunities to periodically cool down as well.

Enjoy the summer and all it has to offer, but do it safely.  If you happen to be injured this summer by no fault of your own, call The Foster Firm. We specialize in personal injury and worker’s comp claims. We’re always here to help and believe in protecting your rights.

Tips On Securing A Fair Injury Settlement | Attorney College Park

When you are injured due to another’s fault or negligence it can result in great stress, physical pain and emotional anguish. There is nothing wrong with seeking just compensation for what you are going through. We work with clients everyday helping them put their lives back together again. Here are a few tips on securing a fair injury settlement:

1. See A Doctor Immediately: Do not assume that you are fine or will be fine? Injuries often show no initial signs or just minimal signs. This does not mean you have not had a serious injury. Explain in detail to your physician how you were injured and get thoroughly examined and treated immediately.

2. Keep Detailed Records: Whenever safely possible, make a record of everything that happens from the time of the injury and after. Notate related phone calls, doctor visits and your pain levels. Also, take pictures of the accident scene if possible.

3. Hire An Experienced Injury Attorney:  Many times insurance companies may contact you with a low ball settlement offer before you have a chance to seek professional counsel. You need to hire a trusted personal injury attorney that is experienced in injury claims. At The Foster Firm, we have the knowledge and qualifications to help you win your case.

Protect yourself after injury. Fair compensation is your right. Feel free to contact us if you have been injured. We can answer all of your questions and will help to protect your rights.

Preventing Injury In Dangerous Winter Weather | Personal Injury Lawyer College Park

This winter has been a tough one here in Atlanta. Winter storms have created dangerous weather conditions that can cause injury to your person and property.  Ice, freezing temperatures and high winds can reek havoc in many different ways.  From downed power lines to icy roads, it is important to be aware of your surroundings during a winter storm so you can protect yourself. Here are a few tips to help you prevent injury in dangerous winter weather:

MINIMIZE TRAVEL: Roads and highways  can be a dangerous place during a storm due to black ice, poor visibility and distractions. Whenever possible stay home and out of the car.

PLAN AHEAD: Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare. Have food, water, flash lights, a weather radio and other emergency supplies ready to go well in advance of the storm. Also keep a full first aid kit within reach.

PREPARE YOUR PROPERTY: From your car to your walkway, prepare for the weather. Have salt, shovels, ladders, proper tires and any other things needed to keep your home and person safe. You don’t want anyone to slip on an icy walkway or be hit by falling ice. Make sure your home is a “safe zone", free of debris, ice and large icicles.

If you were hurt in anyway during the latest winter storms, let us know.  We are experienced personal injury attorneys in the College Park & Atlanta areas. The Foster Firm can protect your rights and get you the compensation you deserve for your injuries.  We will be right there helping you to get back on your feet.  We never charge you any fees until you are fully compensated.

Reducing Car Accident Risks For Young Drivers | Car Accident Attorney College Park

The potential for car accident injury is an inherent risk in driving.  So minimizing that potential is important. Young drivers are at an increased risk for accidents. Properly preparing, training and monitoring your young driver can make all the difference. Here are a few things you can do to that may help reduce the driving risks your young driver faces:

MONITOR THEM: It may seem invasive, but remember that driving is a privilege, and your young driver needs to view it that way. There are  now many ways to monitor speed, location and distractions. Your new driver will likely be much more responsible if they know you are watching.

BE A POSITIVE EXAMPLE: You can’t tell your young driver not to text, eat and speed while driving if you do those things in front of them. Your example sets the stage for them. The best way to encourage them to be a safe driver is by being one yourself.

SET CONSEQUENCES FOR BREAKING THE RULES: If your new driver breaks any of the rules you set, have firm consequences. Do not tolerate unsafe driving, intoxicated driving, or sneaking and driving without permission. Stick to whatever punishment you set so they understand that their violation of the rules is serious.

Still, even when we do our best to protect our young drivers they can still end up in a car accident. It is important that you protect their rights if they are injured in car accident. We are experienced College Park car accident attorneys and work hard to ensure that your young driver is fully compensated for all monetary loss as well as pain & suffering. Call us for a free consultation.
